We’d like to say Baby Charlie’s Santa Fe Beach Nursery, but that would  be doing injustice to the shark. We know what you are thinking – What in the world are we talking about?. Well, wait till you read the story!

Tiffany Mustich and her family – that includes husband Peter and baby boy Charlie – live in Southern California and in her own words, ‘we love absolutely everything about the beach community we live in.’ So, as you may have guessed, it follows that they have a cosy, beach aesthetic throughout their home and by extension, so does Baby Charlie’s nursery.

The sticking point for Tiffany, however, was the color scheme. Nothing was decided until, one day, in came the Jellycat Shark! Read the rest in Tiffany’s own words…

Q&A with Tiffany Mustich – Part 1

In Part 1 of her Q&A with us, Tiffany talks about the colors, the décor and style and the theme she chose for her son’s nursery and why.

What was your inspiration for the nursery design and décor?
We have lived in Southern California near the beach for the past 8 years, and we love absolutely everything about the beach community we live in. We have always had a pretty classic, simple, yet cozy beach aesthetic throughout our house and when we found out we were having a boy we knew we wanted to try to continue this theme for his nursery. Surprisingly enough the biggest inspiration for the nursery colors actually came from my husband! While we were pregnant my husband {Peter} came home with a navy blue “Jellycat” shark stuffed animal, this was the first gift he bought for the baby. With that one little gift our nursery colors were set! Navy, gray, & white. Shortly after that I found Evolur’s convertible cribs.

What drew you to évolur over other nursery brands?
The color and style. I love evolurs color “storm gray” for a boys room, and the square pattern was my favorite. I looked at so many other options but all the patterns felt a little too feminine for a little boys room (flowery, curvy backboards, etc.). Second was the convertible option. The crib can transform from a crib, to a toddler bed, to a kids bed! Naturally we bought the dresser to go with the crib, and the dresser topper to hold the changing station in place (also great for keeping things organized – a huge bonus for me!). I love that the topper can come off when we no longer need it. Both pieces of furniture go with our aesthetic and color palette so my mind was made up!

Did the room pose any design challenges?
Before the baby was born we went from a 1 bedroom beach house to a newly renovated 3 bedroom home – so space didn’t provide us any design challenges. The only challenge we did face was finding navy blue nursery decor that wasn’t too nautical. As I mentioned before my husband and I have both lived in SoCal near the beach for awhile and we both lean towards California surf vibes vs. the nautical boat and anchor look. You can find a lot of nautical decor out there so you have to get creative and start keeping an eye out for surf inspired decorations. First we had the shark Jellycat, next was our navy blue Pottery barn kids rug to help pull the space & colors together. Then Target was selling the “ride the wave” wall art, & they also had some baby books with nice navy blue colored covers. These elements pulled our vision together while keeping the classic, clean aesthetic intact. After Charlie was born my mom painted letters for his name to place above his crib!

Did you and your spouse agree on style, or did you blend styles and how?
We agreed on the style from the beginning. However… My husband always wants to add more color and I’m pretty minimal in the color department, I like to keep things clean and simple in the house! Since my husband is a surfer & we went with a surf theme it was a win-win regardless.

What does this color scheme mean to you?
Fresh, Clean, & Simple!
